A Crucial New Rover Victory in their Fight to Avoid Relegation
Bolton Villas 25 runs short of DLS as bad light strikes.
After being put into bat by the visiting Bolton Villas, New Rover built a credible opening partnership, scoring 36 runs by the middle of the eighth over and the first wicket of Fahim Khan. Michael Richmond played a reasonable captain’s innings, seeing New Rover up to 70-4 by the end of the twentieth over, when he was caught off the bowling of Adam Shabir.
While all the bowlers for Bolton Villas had strong economy rates, with Adam Shabir and Zahid Khan taking three wickets apiece, a high-quality innings for Mohammad Khan ensured New Rover pushed onto a final score of 184. He scored 64 in the last home game and his 72 this week was even better. A highlights reel would certainly feature a gloriously timed cover drive for 4 in the forty-second over, alongside two 4s and a 6 in succession two overs later.
The weather was certainly a factor in this game, and an early tea was taken after 35 overs, when New Rover were 130-6. Fortunately, the maximum number of overs were only reduced to 48 for each team. Nonetheless, considering this disruption mid-innings, both teams did rather well not to lose their focus. Bolton Villas were pleased to take all ten wickets at the end of the forty-sixth over, but equally, New Rover were pleased to put an extra 54 runs on the board.
With the weather threatening an early result, and attention moving ever closer to DLS, the second innings was quite tense. Moreover, the fact that the first three overs comprised a rapid 26 runs for the visiting side and 2 wickets for the home side, ensured that the game was on a dramatic course from the outset.
The first three wickets for New Rover all belonged to Drew Fullalove, and with wickets of his own in the eighteenth and twenty-fourth over, Carlo Zanella reduced Bolton Villas to 92-5. As both teams were exactly half-way to victory, the DLS par score was perilously, or reassuringly close depending on which way you look at it.
Two wickets from Aqsad Ali and one from Adil Mehmood saw the visiting side eight down by the end of the thirty-eighth over. With Bolton Villas still needing over 50 runs to win and having so few wickets remaining at this point, they saw the DLS par score drift away from them. So, when play was finally brought to an end for bad light after the following over, New Rover had won by 25 runs with the DLS method.
Prathamesh Karande was the best of Bolton Villas’ batsmen on the day, scoring 41, but it was the team improvements in the field for New Rover which proved decisive. They cut down massively on the number of extras compared to the previous weeks, putting more pressure on the batting side to make up the necessary runs. Cutting down on errors in this manner will be significant if New Rover are going to get the points they need from the final two games of the season.
